WHAT'S HAPPENING

THE PEOPLE'S BICENTENNIAL COMMISSION seeks to counter-balance the "selling of the Bicentennial" in the form of television and radio spots, books, pamphlets, etc. of a fairytale view of the Revolution. A local People's Bicentennial Commission is forming in Cleveland to plan what they'll do specifically in Cleveland and would appreciate input from anyone interested. For more information, call Chuck Ackerman at (216) 696-3735. from: UP FROM UNDER COLLECTIVE, 339 Lafayette St., New York, N. Y. 10012.

We are in the process of working on the next issue of Up From Under, but we depend on the manuscripts and ideas we receive from women all over the country. We don't want professional writers. We want to continue to be an outlet and a forum for the working class woman. We also need members for our collective. Feminist women with working class consciousness who are hardworking and patient can spend one or two evenings a week (and be dependable). Please write to us at the address listed above, or call on Saturdays between 12 and 5 p.m. at Area Code 212, 260-1040.

THE OAKLAND FEMINIST WOMEN'S HEALTH CENTER', 2930 McClure St., Oakland, Calif., 94609, is calling for Global Self-Help Week! "As we've conceptualized it so far it will be one full week in October 1975 (Oct. 25-31) during which women all over the world will be sharing Self-Help at the same time. There are lots of ideas developing and they want more. At this point they need ideas, support, publicity and coordinators." Contact: Ann Moorhead at the Center.

The American Indian Movement Tourist Boycott

"See South Dakota Last" is the slogan AIM has chosen to convey its disgust with the state power structure. The state compaign issued through its Bicentennial Commission focuses on Mr. Rushmore, the "shrine of Democracy", because four U.S. presidents are carved on its face. AIM points to the carvings as a sacrilege committed upon the sacred stone Paha Sapa. It has been a sacred place for the Lakota tribes for generations, and it still is under a treaty with the U.S. in 1868.

Anyone planning a vacation, whether to South Dakota or not, is asked to participate by writing to state officials:

I. Gov. Richard Kneip State Capital

Pierre, South Dakota 57501

2. Director of Parks, Game & Recreation State Office Building

Pierre, South Dakota 57501

3. Director of Highways

4. South Dakota Becentennial Commission State Capital Building

Pierre, South Dakota 57501

The Wounded Knee Legal Defense/Offense Committee suggests that the letters clearly state you expect to avoid South Dakota as an effort to support the Indian position, not because you fear "militants",

Further suggestions for letters: Holiday Inns, Inc., since that is the largest hotel/motel chain in South Dakota (and a copy of the letter to Vice President Nelson Rockefeller, as a controlling shareholder in the corporation); Senators George McGovern and James Abourez while being doves in regard to U.S. Vietnam policy, could stand a jolt to remind them of colonial oppressive conditions at home. Write them c/o Senate Office Building, Washington, D.C. 20515. South Dakota Representatives Frank Denholm and James Abdnor can be reached at U.S. House Office Building, Washington, D.C. 20515.
